Pat Benatar, an American rock star who performed such hits as “Heartbreaker”, “Love is a Battlefield” and “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” has
seen her fair share of rejection, yet perservered her was through trying times to eventually enjoy great success.
Pat Benatar originally studied at Julliard music school before she dropped out to marry her high school sweetheart. They moved to New York, but soon separated and later divorced. With this change of events she renewed her earlier vision of becoming a professional singer and started working nights as a lounge singer. During the day she constantly visited record companies with her demo tape in hand.
She did this same routine for three long years while enduring countless rejections due to record companies not liking her style – they had nothing against her voice. On Halloween night in 1977, Pat Benatar performed her act dressed as a modern, urban vampire and the crowd went wild. This convinced Benatar to keeps the black tights, short black top and heavy eyeliner. This was the “style” that the record companies were looking for and she landed a contract with Chrysalis Records.
Her first single, “Heartbreaker” shot up the Top 40 charts, as did several more songs immediately following on the heels of her successful first single. She went on to win four consecutive Grammy awards from 1980-1983 and several other Grammy nominations.
Her determination, and finally her observation to change her style is what led to her great success.
