Social media – it is probably the most phenomenal invention ever conceived by man since the birth of the World Wide Web. And even though earlier versions of online communication have flourished since the earliest days of the internet, nothing compares to the versatility, ease of use, and fun factor of social media. However, most small business owners end up wondering “how can social media help them make more money?” How does it help them, and more importantly how does it help their prospects and customers?

There are a lot of benefits to having a social media presence for your business, but the most important is that you are building a list of potential prospects that you can speak to through a particular social media outlet, such as Facebook or Twitter.

You may say, “But I already have an email list, why do I need another list?” Granted, your email list is your most important list, but your social media lists are a close second – and you should be working hard to get those on your social media lists converted over to your email list. Why?

Because you don’t literally own your Facebook or Twitter account. Those companies are letting you use their software and can choose to close down your account for whatever reason they want. If that happens, then POOF, your list is gone forever. That’s why you want to try to convert your followers and fans to email list subscribers. You own your email list no one can take that away from you on a whim.

So, now you may be wondering, “If it’s that risky, then why would I want to invest the time in it if it can be taken away someday?”

Because it’s worth it to have a presence where ever your potential prospects are hanging out. Think of it like going to a brick and mortar networking event. You show up at those because your prospects are going to be there, and it gives you a chance to meet with them and start building trust with them so that they will become a customer or client. Social media is very similar. If your potential prospects are there, then you need to be there too.
