Why Achieve Goals?

Why should you try and achieve goals? What is it about the goal setting process that makes it so powerful? This article will provide interesting insights and answers to these questions.

Why endeavor to achieve goals? Because if we don’t it is unlikely we will accomplish very much! If we want to achieve major accomplishments in our life or business, we need to set goals and follow the practical steps needed to realize them.

Many people will consciously set a goal and follow the steps needed to reach them. Others also work toward goals but may not realize exactly what they are doing. They may simply have a burning desire or ambition and without any formal framework, work towards realizing that ambition. They can often see themselves in their mind’s eye where they want to be. Months or years later they get there.

What is the secret of goal setting and why does it create such powerful results?

To answer that question we need to understand a little about how the brain works. A colossal amount of information enters our brain every second of our lives, pouring in from our senses. The brain filters information and alerts us to things that we deem important or crucial while taking care of other necessary business on automatic pilot.

For example, you may be listening to the television news playing in the background while you are cleaning your teeth. You are not aware of your brain consciously directing you on how to hold the brush, how to move the bristles over your teeth, etc.

Your concentration is on hearing the news and interpreting the meaning for yourself. All the while the brain is taking care of your teeth brushing almost as if it is on automatic. How can it do this? Because you have done it so many times you don’t need to think about it.

So when you set a goal, or have a burning ambition or desire to accomplish something or be someone, you are giving your brain signals that this particular subject is important. The subject is number 1 on your priority list. From there on, the brain alerts you to information or people related to this goal or desire and as good as flags it for your attention. It almost rings an alarm bell in your head instead of just filtering it out as it might have done had you not signalled to your brain that this subject is of great importance to you.

Suppose you are having a conversation with a friend or a stranger and the subject your goal is centered around comes up. You are alerted. You ask questions and find this person is very knowledgeable on the subject or has contacts with people who are experts in the field.

Previously that snippet of conversation would have gone unnoticed but now it rings a bell in the mind and you take it up leading you to what could possibly be a very important resource.

That’s the power of goal setting!
